University Of Houston Acquires DJ Screw's Record Collection

For those of you who didn't know:

The University of Houston Libraries have acquired a piece of Hip Hop history, as the institution has obtained the DJ Screw Sound Recordings.

The collection, consisting of over 1,000 vinyl records, served as the basis for DJ Screw's "screw tapes," which originated the "chopped and screwed" sound so popular in Houston.

The collection contains rare 12" records by Southern and West Coast artists, and the majority of it was donated by the late dj's father, Robert Earl Davis Sr., with additional support from the John and Rebecca Moores Endowed Library Fund.

The collection will be open for use by researchers in 2013. Selections from the collection will be on dispaly in the M.D. Anderson Library as part of the exhibit "DJ Screw and and the Rise of Houston Hip Hop," reports ozonemag.com.

The exhibit will be presented jointly by the University of Houston Libraries, the HERE at Rice University, African American Students at the University of Houston, and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts at the University of Houston.

What To Use To Make A Beat? - Beat Making Machine Software

I'm normally pretty skeptic of most online beat making software, because I've dabbled with a lot of beat making software in my time from Fruit Loops to Magix, but this was one was pretty cool.. Only thing I didn't like was that there weren't enough YouTube videos showing how to make a simple beat, but if you're reading this than you can probably figure it out on your own! Lol.

RIP Heavy D

Heavy D 1967-2011

Making the news all that more bittersweet is the fact that Heavy D had been making a musical comeback of sorts. Last month, he delivered his first live performance in 15 years at a tribute concert for Michael Jackson in London, which he then followed up with a performance at the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards. Below, you can watch footage from his BET Hip Hop Awards performance, as well as the video for Heavy D and the Boyz’s hit single ”Now That We Found Love”.Along with his music career, Heavy D also found success in front of the camera. He appeared in a number of television shows including A Different World and Living Single, as well as feature films like Life and The Cider House Rules. More recently, he made a cameo in the 2011 film Tower Heist, playing a security guard.

Born Dwight Errington Myers, Heavy D was the founder of the hip-hop group Heavy D and the Boyz. The first act signed to Uptown Records, Heavy D and the Boyz released a string of commercially successful records in the late 1980s and early 1990s, including their 1987 debutLiving Large and 1989′s Big Tyme. In addition, the group provided the theme songs for both Living Color and MADtv, and Heavy D collaborated with Michael Jackson on his 1991 single, “Jam”.

Komandante

Carlos Lopez he is known as Komandante a D.M.V. artist who was born in Houston, Texas and raised in Northern Virginia. As a young child he was into music listening to the likes of Nas, Wu-Tang, Mobb Deep also to the latin artist like Tempo, Mexicano 777. While listening to this artist he discovered his talent for rapping freestyling at neighborhood party's and with his friends while hanging out. About 3 years ago he started getting more involved into to the hip hop genre recording with the likes of Mexican 777, Reychesta from Chosen Few and Temperamento.
